How to Make an Apron: A Step-by-Step Guide

Making your own apron can be a delightful and rewarding project. Whether you’re a seasoned seamstress or a beginner, creating a custom apron allows you to express your style and add a practical touch to your kitchen attire. Let’s dive into the steps for making a simple apron, and I’ll also include some helpful YouTube videos to guide you along the way.

Materials Needed:

  • Fabric: Choose a sturdy cotton or linen fabric in a print or color that you love.
  • Sewing Machine (or you can hand-sew if you prefer)
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Iron and Ironing Board

Steps:

  1. Cutting the Fabric:
    • Measure and cut your fabric to the desired apron size. You’ll need a rectangular piece for the apron body and additional strips for the waistband and ties.
  2. Hemming:
    • Hem the sides, top, and bottom of the apron piece. Fold the edges twice (about 1.25 inches for the top and bottom, and smaller hems for the sides) and stitch them in place.
  3. Adding a Pocket:
    • Hem the pocket piece and sew it onto the apron body. Divide the pocket into two sections if you’d like.
  4. Creating the Straps:
    • Cut four straps (two for the upper corners and two for the lower corners) from your fabric. Sew along the long sides, turn them right side out, and press them flat.
  5. Attaching the Straps:
    • Attach the straps to the apron. Sew the neck strap to the top of the apron, folding under a quarter inch and stitching it in a square. Sew the waist straps to the sides in the same way.
  6. Finishing Touches:
    • Iron your apron to give it a crisp look.
    • Put on your handmade apron and feel proud!

How to Sew Sleeves into Armhole: A Beginner’s Guide

Note: The advice below is general. If you are using 5Berries Patterns, please follow the specific tutorial that accompanies your pattern.

1. Prepare Your Materials

Before you start, make sure you have the following:

  • Fabric: Choose a fabric suitable for your project.
  • Sleeve Pattern: Cut out your sleeve pattern pieces.
  • Armhole Pattern: Ensure your garment has armhole openings.

2. Mark the Notches

On your sleeve pattern, mark notches at the sleeve head. These notches will help you align the sleeve with the armhole correctly.

3. Pin the Sleeve to the Armhole

  1. Turn your garment inside out.
  2. Slip the right-side-out sleeve into the armhole, aligning the underarm seam.
  3. Pin the sleeve to the armhole, matching the notches and the top of the sleeve cap.

4. Easing In the Excess Fabric

  • Sleeves are usually slightly larger than the armhole. To ease in the excess fabric:
    • Distribute gathers or pin pleats evenly around the sleeve cap.
    • Pin the excess fabric between the pins using a precision pinning technique.

5. Stitch the Sleeve to the Armhole

  1. Tack the sleeve to the armhole along the sewing line.
  2. Start sewing from the underarm section, with the bodice side facing up.
  3. Switch to the sleeve side facing up when sewing the sleeve head section.
  4. Remove the tacking stitches.

6. Press and Finish

  1. Press the sleeve over a tailor’s ham to shape it nicely.
  2. Hem the sleeve if needed.
  3. Weave the loose threads inside the outfit.
